As folks from the south will tell you, it’s not pronounced “pee-can,” but rather “pah-kan.” It is a subtle difference — but it is the subtleties that make southern cuisine so special. In Alabama, pecan pie restaurants are the dish of choice, and a few have earned a reputation for being the best.
Acre – Auburn
Just around the corner from the football Mecca of Auburn University is a pie shop that requires a reservation — Acre. This upscale restaurant does not sacrifice southern tradition for their chic appearance, with indulgences like their bourbon-chocolate pecan pie made with vanilla wafer, orange caramel and chocolate ganache.
Heaton Pecan Farm – Clanton
While some pie aficionados like some ambiance with their meal, others would rather just get down to business. For those who fall into the latter category, the big white barn that is Heaton Pecan Farm is the place to check out. Although their classic pecan pie is always a respectable choice, their three-pound pecan fruitcake is perhaps their greatest accomplishment. Or, for those trying to watch their weight, pecans can be purchased a la mode, by the bag.
PieLab – Greensboro
For a progressive interpretation of the age-old dish, PieLab, in the heart of Greensboro, is a great stop. Their goal is a simple one — promote diversity. Not only is this stated in the public manifesto printed on their storefront window, it is also articulated through their ever mismatched tables and their menu of constantly changing, hefty-sized pies.
Priester’s Pecans – Fort Deposit
For some pies, traveling to the sticks is a worthwhile endeavor. Don’t let the old trading post appearance fool you — Priester’s in Fort Deposit delivers with their much-appreciated simplicity and respect to tradition.
The Downtowner Restaurant – Selma
Everything about Downtowner’s aesthetic screams old — and not necessarily in a good way. It may look like an American Legion Hall, but pie isn’t about appearance, it’s about taste. And the Downtowner’s taste has kept locals coming for years.
