Many people have lots of different roller coaster preferences: Some like the loops, others go for the speed and then the really insane people spend all day on the spinning tea cups. We’re focused on the best 5 roller coasters the world has to offer, each with a different characteristic for all tastes.
Formula Rossa, Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi
Let’s start off with one for the speed freaks. The Formula Rossa is the fastest roller coaster in the world. It gets up to a top speed of 149 mph, and it’s so fast that you have to wear protective goggles in case an innocent bug hits you in the face. Any daredevil wishing to inflict this upon themselves will experience up to 4.8 Gs. It’s also probably the cheapest way to experience what it’s like to be a member of Top Gun.
Steel Dragon 2000, Nagashima Spa Land in Japan
This coaster boasts the longest track length you’ll find in the world, as well as being the sixth fastest in the world. It has got its thrills and is great for adrenaline seekers, and this would probably be the best option for the parents that want to get their money’s worth.
Kingda Ka, Six Flags in the United States
For those of you wanted to plummet from sky-high, Kingda Ka is your ride. Built in 2005 with a Nepalese mythical tiger theme, this particular one is known as a ‘strata coaster,’ since it reaches a height of more than 400 feet — 456 to be exact. It’s not only the highest in the world, but it’s the second fastest, so unsurprisingly it’s popular.
The Smiler, Alton Towers in the United Kingdom
After The Smiler had its unfortunate incident back in 2015 causing serious injuries to many of the riders, it reopened earlier this year. It currently holds the record for the most inversions on a roller coaster (and probably most controversy). The ride will fling you around left, right and center and then leave you not wanting for any more. Make sure you ride this one before lunch.
Leap The Dips, Lakemont Park in the United States
What should be here is the most voted roller coaster that ticks all the boxes and wins all the medals, namely the Millennium Force at Cedar Point in the United States. However, I would like to note the oldest wooden roller coaster still running, Leap The Dips. At a top velocity of 10 mph, you’ll be absolutely fine having lunch beforehand, and you can even take your nana on this one as the speed is no doubt comparable to her driving. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1996, go back in time to when these types of speeds were thought so dangerous it would melt your brain.
