Surfing in Senegal is best November–March, when conditions are good for surfers of all levels. The waves tend to be smaller August–October, which might suit beginners. Here are some of the best spots to surf in the West African nation.
Ouakam
This is the most beautiful surf spot in the country, found near Dakar. It’s a tough place to surf, with rocks close to the surface, but advanced surfers will have a great time on the world-class waves.
Yoff
This is a great spot for beginners under normal conditions, but when the conditions are right things can get exciting for more experienced riders, too. The floor is sandy here, so you will be in less danger.
Virage
Near Yoff is another beginner beach called Virage, where conditions are similar. Things can be crowded on the weekends, but during the week you will be able to practice in peace.
Ngor
This small island is only a few hundred meters off the coast of Dakar, and home to a few small beaches. The most famous waves are the Ngor Right and Left point breaks.
Somone
This place is around 70 kilometers south of Dakar, and the beach is near a noted bird-watching area. Perfect for those who want to combine a surf trip with other activities.
