Romania´s capital is considered an Eastern European gem for its history, architecture and charming yet obvious grit. For travelers who prefer their destinations have a bit of an edge, Bucharest is a great stop to add to your itinerary. Here are five items to get you started on your trip to Romania.
Palace of Parliament
During your inevitable visit to the Palace of Parliament, make it a point to ascend to the terrace where you´ll find some of the best views of Bucharest´s main thoroughfare, Boulevard Unirii.
Romanian Countryside
Although not located within the city limits of Bucharest, the Romanian countryside certainly warrants a visit as its majestic landscapes and picturesque castles capture your imagination. From Bran Castle to Peles Palace to the Sinaia Monastery, the variety and intricate details of these edifices, both inside and out, do not disappoint.
Old Town
Bucharest´s Old Town is ideal for a quick stop or stroll down the pedestrian-only streets. Rest with a coffee at one of the countless cafés or browse the iconic sculptures in Revolution Square, one of which is Vlad the Impaler, a 13th-century prince on whom the character of Dracula was based.
Romanian Athenaeum
Architecture and classical-music enthusiasts must visit the Romanian Athenaeum, a staple of Bucharest´s charm. Aim to catch a performance in this stunning concert hall or simply enjoy the architecture within and the manicured park in front.
