Suriname consists of roughly 80 percent jungle, which is why the vast majority of the population and tourists can be found in Paramaribo. But there are plenty of worthwhile towns to discover all throughout the country.
Paramaribo
Paramaribo is the capital and largest city in Suriname. Thanks to a diverse population of Creole, Javanese, Indians and Chinese, among others, it is home to an eclectic culture travelers love. It offers the best variety of food, shopping and architecture.
Lelydorp
With a population of just more than 18,000, Suriname’s second-largest city is Lelydorp. The small town has a large Javanese culture, and some truly incredible food. Its location near Paramaribo makes it easy to visit.
Nieuw Nickerie
Nieuw Nickerie is a primary hub for the country’s rice and carrot trade. Once located on the ocean, it was forced to move inland due to a flood. However, it still offers access to some of the most beautiful beaches in Suriname.
Galibi
Galibi is a small resort town on the eastern side of Suriname and is prized for its stunning beaches and affordable prices. The real draw is the swarm of sea turtles that arrive every year to mate. Leatherback and Krappe turtles are drawn to the area, making it a great place to visit.
Apoera
Apoera is the last city on the the East-West Link road that connects both sides of the country and sees a lot of foot traffic. The population is small, comprised mainly of the Arawak people, and offers a unique cultural viewpoint. It’s also a great landing point for anyone looking to explore the Amazon.
