The City of Brotherly Love is known for many a good thing, like football, delicious steak sandwiches and Rocky Balboa. With all that mainstream attention, it’s time draw attention to Philadelphia’s eclectic side by visiting some of these unique, weird and wonderful places on your next trip.

The Mutter Museum

Some of the finest collections of medical oddities on display for the world to see is a spectacle not to miss. Part of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the museum’s aim is to celebrate the human body while showcasing ancient medical instruments and anatomical specimens, most notably Einstein’s brain and the tallest skeleton in North America.

Eastern State Penitentiary

The world’s first true Penitentiary, this prison is open for tours through its deserted cell blocks, expansive grounds and the much-feared death row chamber. Visitors can even visit the cell of Al Capone, made to look as if he is still doing his time.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

A veritable labyrinth of mosaic art, the Magic Gardens is a lifelong culmination of artist Issiah Zagar and his love for the mural. Zagar’s mosaic murals can be found all over Philadelphia, but Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens is the largest concentration of his work, complete with an outdoor sculpture garden.

The Masonic Temple

Walls decked out with giant portraits, columns reaching floor to ceiling and huge bronze Sphinx statues adorning doorways make a tour of the Freemason’s Temple impressive with its architecture and history.

City Hall Observation Deck

Complete with a giant statue of William Penn on top, visitors can ride a rickety four-person elevator to the top of City Hall and enjoy an expansive view of Philadelphia and the surrounding area.
