The Gambia is a fascinating place to visit for its culture as well as its natural attractions.
The history of the country is entwined with that of the slave trade, and you can learn about the links on a visit to Kunta Kinte Island, a former British slaving post. You can also see the remains of a French slaving fort and a small museum at Albreda Village.
Art fans will love a visit to Wide Open Walls, a living art project in the villages near the Ballabu Wildlife Conservation Area. Locals covered the buildings with bright paintings of animals and local figures, resulting in some great street art.
Another artistic attraction is the Tunbung Arts Village, made from the work of Gambian artist Etu Ndow. While Ndow passed away in 2014, his work is still exhibited here, looked after by his nephew.
Those interested in the traditional culture of The Gambia should visit the Tanji Village Museum, which recreates a village of the Mandinka people. Visitors can learn about their customs, music, and medicinal plants.
If you are in the capital, Banjul, and want to soak up some culture, head to the Old Town. Here you will see loads of old colonial buildings and traditional clapboard houses.
