Tips / Travel

American Samoa is part of a remote cluster of islands in the South Pacific. It offers a great alternative to more touristy places like Hawai’i, while still technically keeping you in the States. It should be on every traveler’s bucket list.

It lacks a tourism industry. American Samoa doesn’t rely on tourism money to get by, free from many of the gimmicks you’ve come to expect from island destinations. The culture here is strong, the people aren’t jaded and you won’t have people shouting at you to buy stuff on the streets.

It’s just as beautiful as other islands, but less crowded. Without a tourist industry, there aren’t nearly as many people visiting as other islands. That leaves you room to explore at your own pace without the crowds. The island is also still stunning and full of breathtaking scenery that includes Ofu Beach, Rainmaker Mountain and black lava cliffs scattered throughout 30 miles.

The locals are friendly. Samoans are a jovial people and welcoming of guests. They’re happy to share a meal while teaching you about their history. They’re also fun! The locals participate in plenty of festivities that involve unique dancing and music you won’t find anywhere else. They also have some of best food in the South Pacific.
