Tips / Destination

Looking for a fun road trip? Take to Florida’s A1A, a 300-plus-mile highway following the state’s Atlantic Coast. Where are some of the best spots to stop along this designated Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway? Here are a few ideas:

If you fly into Jacksonville, Florida, to start your A1A road trip, there’s no better place to start than with a few nights’ stay in Ponte Vedra Beach at the two luxurious resorts that call it home: Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and The Lodge & Club. With golfing, fine dining and a world-class spa, it will leave you refreshed and ready to hit the road.

Next up, St. Augustine is America’s oldest city and an excellent spot for exploring Floridian history if you’ve never visited. With historic charm on every street corner, you’ll have endless ways to experience St. Augustine before moving on.

Think surfing is only for the West Coast? Think again. Cocoa Beach is known as the small wave capital of the world and has established itself as a newbie-friendly surf spot, with the world’s largest surf shop and a world-famous pier. Beyond the beach, explore nearby Kennedy Space Center.

Next, stop into Sebastian Inlet State Park, popular for surfing, but also sea fishing. The beautiful park features two museums and a campground.

South Beach

The A1A continues into the Florida Keys, but that’s a whole separate road trip on its own. You can wrap up your journey in South Beach, Miami, if you wish, having seen some of Florida’s best Atlantic Coast attractions and cities — or, head on down to Key West to extend your trip further.
