In 2017, Finland reported a record-breaking number of inbound air passengers, nearly 22.7 million. While the destination is often overlooked in lieu of Iceland and Denmark, it experiences a renaissance of late — and for good reason.
Finland is a beautiful destination all year-round, with friendly people, impressive cultural institutions and a great food scene.
Nature and adventure lovers can head to Levi, a resort in Finnish Lapland known for its quality ski slopes and views of the Northern Lights. Nearby is the Pallas-Yllastunturi National Park with arctic falls and remains of the Linkupalo Volcano. Other national parks include Nuuksio, Urho Kekkonen and Koli, all of which offer wilderness treks, lookout points, large Alpine lakes, waterfalls and beautiful forests. The Ranua Wildlife Park is another must-see, home to 50 arctic species including polar bears.
History and culture buffs can head to Suomenlinna, an 18th-century sea fortress, cultural center and nature area with centuries-old artillery and defensive walls spread across six islands. It offers walking trails, a historic drawbridge, a museum, a brewery and waterside restaurants.
In Helsinki, visit Kiasma, a contemporary art museum, or Ateneium, one of three museums forming the Finnish National Gallery. The National Museum of Finland offers a grand collection of prehistoric artifacts, as well as medieval treasures and 20th-century icons, and the Natural History Museum of Helsinki boasts more than 86,000 square feet of specimens including an awe-inspiring African Elephant.
For a taste of Finland’s heritage and culture, visit Market Square in Helsinki, a harbor-side market with authentic food stalls and crafts and The Artisan’s Quarter in the North Karelia region, selling handmade goods from charming old wooden buildings.
