Celebrate bikes, beer and bemusement at the Tour de Fat, an annual bike parade series from Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing intended to increase awareness and participation in cycling as a sustainable form of transportation.
Tour de Fat honors one of mankind’s greatest inventions with an endless amount of fun activities, like a group bike ride, costume contest, beer tapping, dance contest and live entertainment such as comedy and musical performances.
In addition to the festive bike parade, participants are encouraged to give back to the community in a bold, brave way. Each event features a car-for-bike program, inspiring brave souls to hand over their car keys as a commitment to commute by bike.
In every Tour de Fat city, a role model steps on stage to trade in his or her car keys and pledge to live car-free for one year. Each swapper is awarded a $2,250 stipend to buy their own commuter bike as well as the tremendous support of the crowd. Car for Bike Swappers are chosen after submitting an application highlighting why they are ready to give up their vehicle for the gift of two wheels.
Now in its 16th season, Tour de Fat is hitting cities all over the United States this summer and fall, with upcoming locations in Chicago, Twin Cities, Boise, Fort Collins, Denver, San Francisco, San Diego and Tempe.
