Jurassic World and the preceding film series gave us some of the most beautiful landscapes in movie history. It turns out each one of them were shot in the same place —
Kauloa Nature Reserve in Hawai’i. Touring the spot is a great way to feel like you’re walking alongside dinosaurs.
Kauloa Ranch is lovingly nicknamed Hollywood’s “Hawai’i Backlot” due to the amount of films shot here. More than 50 blockbuster movies and TV shows have used the park as a backdrop, including Lost, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and, of course, every movie in the Jurassic Park series. Its stunning landscapes and rugged beauty make the perfect setting for prehistoric films.
There are numerous tours taking place here each day. They offer bus rides and hiking tours that’ll take you all throughout the reserve. One of them even hikes up to the breathtaking 150-foot Waihi Falls. You’ll also discover remnants of the footprints from the movie Godzilla and travel the famous “penguin road” from 50 First Dates. Fans of Lost will be thrilled to see Hurley’s golf course. Within the range there are also leftovers from World War II, including an army bunker that rests on the side of a mountain.
Since the tours sell out quickly you’ll want to call a few weeks in advance. Tickets for a Hollywood Film Sites Tour are only $45.95 per adult. It’s a great way for fans of Jurassic World to get a taste of life on the infamous Isla Nubar while also experiencing the stark beauty of Hawai’i.
