Hidden in an industrial park area of Hamilton, N.J., is the Grounds for Sculpture. The sculpture park and art museum features an ever-evolving collection of outdoor sculptures and rotating exhibits at six indoor galleries. Founded by J. Seward Johnson with the goal of making contemporary sculpture available to the masses, the Grounds for Sculpture opened to the public in 1992 on the site of the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds.
The Grounds for Sculpture encourages visitors to interact with the art. Feel free to touch pieces of art marked with a green tag; don’t touch those with a red tag. The Grounds for Sculpture isn’t just home to artwork. Peacocks and other wildlife live on the 42-acre park.
While there, be sure to stop by Rat’s Restaurant for lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch. The quaint eatery is named after the character in creator J. Seward Johnson’s favorite childhood book, The Wind in the Willows. Tucked away and overlooking a pond, Rat’s excels in country French cuisine. Reservations are recommended. Grounds for Sculpture is open Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Regular adult admission costs $15. A limited number of $10 tickets are available online only each day. Timed tickets are issued April–September and booking online is highly encouraged. Grounds for Sculpture is a short drive from the Hamilton train station and close to major highways.
