It’s tempting to want to see it all, especially when in a city like the world-class,cultural leader of New York City, but you can be assured some tourism staples are definitely not worth the time. Most of your typical “must-sees” are over-saturated and overrated, and usually have less expensive alternatives that give the traveler more of an authentic experience than your run-of-the-mill tourist-y hotspot.
The Empire State Building
While it’s a classic of the city skyline, it’s best seen from the peak of another NYC high-rise. A ride up to the top of the Empire State only comes after a hefty fee and a long line, and even then, the view can be beat. In a cement jungle like New York, you’re bound to find a roof top bar or bridge walkway with a much more appealing experience, such as the Brooklyn Heights Promenade with sweeping views of the city.
Central Park
It’s iconic, yes, yet what you’ve seen in countless movies and television shows is guaranteed to be what you see in person — except a lot more crowded, noisy, and not worth your while. A much more enjoyable way to wile your afternoon away in New York City can be spent at Prospect Park or the super trendy High Line.
Little Italy
This section of the city is little more than a sad little strip of outdated spots overshadowed by Chinatown. The truth hurts. New York City’s culinary scene offers an enormous plethora of truly amazing Italian-American eats. In fact, check out our list of the Top 5 Italian Restaurants in NYC.
Times Square
It’s exactly what you think it is: crowded, loud and underwhelming. Sure, the flashing lights are dazzling for a minute, and then the cacophony of advertisements and shiny signs are just a sight for sore eyes. And everything from shopping to dining within the area is overpriced.
