Tips / Travel

You’ve booked your flight and are ready to visit your loved ones for the holidays. Now it’s time to make sure your carefully chosen presents arrive with you.

More and more Americans choose to travel with gifts rather than mailing them. Last year, InsuranceQuotes.com shared the results of a survey which reported 23 million Americans had packages stolen from their homes. With the rise of online shopping, the threat of “porch theft” is expected to rise in coming years.

When flying with holiday gifts, the most important rule is to make sure they are within the TSA guidelines. These rules prohibit popular gifts like gel-type candles, most tools and, of course, any liquids more than 3.4 ounces in carry-on bags. Checked bags have more allowances, yet the TSA is legally allowed to search your luggage at any time. Be sure to comply with these rules to avoid your gifts being opened by the wrong person.

Wrapped presents are screened like any other item, but the TSA has the right to search your bag and open your gifts if they contain prohibited items or cause suspicion. This is why it’s best to pack pre-cut wrapping paper and tape in order to wrap your gifts when you arrive at your destination. This will ensure you and your gifts avoid looking a little worn from travel.

However, if you’re cutting it close, make sure to pack your present as though it were shipped before its wrapped. Shifting luggage in the overhead bin and potential turbulence can be disastrous for fragile items.

Finding and wrapping the perfect gift for your loved one can be a hassle in itself without the added stress involved in taking it with you. Follow these few tips to make sure you and your gifts arrive on time for the holidays.
