Tips / Destination

Argentina is a massive country and getting around requires some planning. With popular destinations dotted around the country, read on to find how best you can take in everything the country has to offer.

Many visitors will arrive in the capital, Buenos Aires, which sits on the coast at the mouth of the Rio de la Plata. The easiest way to cover the vast distances between the capital and popular attractions, such as the Iguazu waterfall or Patagonia, is by plane, with frequent domestic flights offered by airlines such as Aerolineas Argentinas, LATAM, Andes and Líneas Aéreas del Estado.

However, if you’re on a budget, you’ll find the buses are far cheaper. Luckily for backpackers, they’re also comfortable, a boon when some journeys can last for almost two full days. You’ll be glad of the reclining seat on a 40-hour ride from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, and it’s probably worth treating yourself to a first-class ticket for better food.

Top bus companies to look out for include Flecha Bus, Plusmar and El Condor. Most Argentinians travel this way thanks to greater reliability than domestic flights, often delayed or cancelled.

Of cours,e you can also rent a car or cycle, but the distances involved mean you’re probably better off relaxing and letting someone else do the driving.
