Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

One of the latest trends in the realm of unique lodging is the proliferation of treehouse hotels, consisting of cabins and lodges lofted high into the canopy. What’s more, these hotels are typically not rough around the edges; often, they’re ultra posh, leaning more towards luxury than camping. You’ll find them around the world, from South Africa to Costa Rica.

Among the top treehouse hotels is Playa Viva in Juluchuca, Mexico, an eco-friendly hotel north of Acapulco consisting of three treehouses with a bedroom and porch. The resort is still in development to add a beach club and boutique hotel — on the ground.

Tree House Lodge in Limón, Costa Rica, is surrounded by the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. The beachfront treehouse is nestled in a 100-year-old Sangrillo tree and has solar heating. You’ll access it via a heart-thumping walk across a hanging steel bridge.

Hinchinbrook Island Resort on Hinchinbrook Island, Australia, sits on a 96-acre national park. Visitors have access to 15 treehouses, each with stunning views of the quiet beaches and the rainforest.

Tree House Point in Issaquah, Wash., is set in a lush forest and offers stunning treehouses decked out in rustic elegance. Rope-and-wood bridges give the place a Swiss Family Robinson feel.
