While Canadian cities like Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal get a whole lot of love, Halifax, on Canada’s eastern coast, flies under the radar. Take a chanceon this harbor city and you’ll be rewarded with a medium-sized city that retains small town charm.

Explore the waterfront.

Take a stroll along Halifax’s waterfront boardwalk or take a tour on a ship around the harbor, the second-largest natural harbor in the world (Sydney takes the first spot). Then drop by the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which has an impressive collection of artifacts, including the largest collection from the ill-fated Titanic, which sank nearby — rescue boats brought survivors back to Halifax and half of the deceased are buried in the city.

Browse the market.

Don’t skip the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market. Held Tuesday through Sunday year-round, this bustling market, first established in 1750, is full of fresh produce, prepared foods, crafts, jewelry and more.

Go barhopping.

With several universities in the city, this town can party. Halifax boasts the most pubs per capita than any other city in North America and many stay open until 3:30 a.m., so night owls can easily get their fix. Don’t skip late night eating options, either; Halifax is famous for its donair, a messy, pita-wrapped sandwich that tastes especially good after a night of drinking.

Visit the wineries.

Nova Scotia has several top-rated wineries and breweries close by. Spend the day sipping on red, learning about wine making in the region and taking in the exquisite views.
