Are you pregnant and planning a trip? The Transportation Security Administration recently released some helpful information for expectant mothers before heading to the airport.
Many pregnant travelers are concerned about airport security screenings. TSA conducts a variety of tests before implementing any screening technology to ensure it is safe for all types of passengers. The advanced imaging technology and walk-through metal detectors at security checkpoints do not use x-rays, but instead use non-ionizing electromagnetic waves that reflect off the body. Research from the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health states this process is safe for everyone, including pregnant travelers.
If you are still concerned, you can opt out of the screening technology entirely and request a patdown. A female TSA officer will conduct the patdown. She will advise you about the details of the process before starting.
Here’s some more information for getting to your flight:
- Check in with your physician about any specific concerns before flying
- Give yourself extra time in getting to the airport, especially if you plan to opt out of the screening technology process
- Ask an agent for assistance getting your bag on the belt if needed
