The fourth and final tennis major of the year is held from late August to early September in New York City.
Players from the top echelons of world tennis travel to the United States to contest the hardcourt championships, where the men’s singles competition was won by Novak Djokovic last year. The Serbian is only the third man in history to hold all four tennis majors at the same time, and should he win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open his remarkable reign will continue for a lot longer.
The women’s competition was won by Italian Flavia Pinetta last year, and she will return to defend her crown in 2016. With Serena Williams looking to win another major to close the gap on record holder Steffi Graf, it should be a summer of hot competition in tennis.
The 2016 U.S. Open will run from Aug. 29–Sept. 11, at the Flushing Meadows complex in New York. A day session ticket to the Arthur Ashe stadium starts at $65, with prices rising to hundreds of dollars for courtside seats at the bigger matches.
Thousands of spectators are expected in New York to watch the elite sportsmen and women battle it out for the U.S. Open title. It goes without saying visitors to the city will not be short of other activities to keep them busy, from visiting tourist sites such as the Statue of Liberty to taking in some of the famous shopping, bars and music venues in New York.
