The official capital of Samoa was founded in the 1850s before the country gained its independence in 1962. Like most island cities of the South Pacific, Apia is rather small, but it makes for the perfect stop before exploring the rest of Upolu island and Samoa. Here’s how to do it with less than 250 Samoan Tala.
Most of Apia is walkable, though if you’re coming from the suburbs into the city, best get a taxi to avoid the number of stray dogs that come out in the evening. For breakfast, check out the local flea market, located near the downtown Clock Tower, where you can get an order of Samoan pancakes, which is fried banana dough for 10 sene. There are also numerous stalls selling local handicrafts, but be watchful of people selling Chinese imports as well. The nearby new market specializes in local produce, including the intoxicating kava plant, popular throughout the South Pacific
The nearby fish market is also great for fish and chips, but Samoa is also one of the world’s best angling destinations, with many charter companies out of Apia. While most boats are too expensive for a $100 budget, it’s not uncommon for backpackers to hitch a ride with a friendly fisherman from the local market. Snorkeling is also available at the Palolo Deep Marine Reserve for eight tala.
Take in some of the island’s rich culture at the Museum of Samoa, which has exhibits on Samoan and Polynesian art, tattoos and history for no admission fee, though donations are appreciated. Some of the artifacts include 3,000-year-old pottery and adze made by the island’s Stone Age inhabitants.
Finish your day in Apia by splurging on a traditional Samoan dinner at Aggie Grey’s Fia Fia, priced at 85 tala per person. The buffet dinner features traditional Samoan cuisine ained with drumming, singing and fire-knife dancing.
