Belfast bounced back from The Troubles and solidified its position as a popular tourism destination. The city’s rich history meets with modern growth and offers many unique experiences.
A trip to Belfast isn’t complete without a full breakfast. The popular Ulster fry typically contains a combination of soda or potato bread, sausage, bacon, fried egg, black pudding, tomato, mushrooms and beans. Sample the traditional meal at Brights Restaurant for about $7.
Walk off your breakfast at Titanic Belfast. Located on the spot where Titanic was built, the visitor attraction extends throughout nine galleries featuring exhibits detailing the history of the great ship. Adult admission is $24, or book ahead online for a 5 percent discount. Or if you’d like a more personalized view of the city, take the famous Black Taxi tour. The local guides provide commentary and tell stories, all with that famous Irish humor. A tour for one or two passengers costs about $40.
Take a stroll through St. George’s Market. Open Friday–Sunday, the market is known for its extensive seafood offerings, local and specialty foods, art and organic products. While you’re there, have lunch at one of the many food stands for about $10. Victoria Square Shopping is about a 10-minute walk away. Its stunning dome architecture houses many popular stores.
Housed in a former bank, The Merchant Hotel boasts several dining options. Cloaked in rich red tones, Berts Bar is designed in the style of a 1930s New York jazz club. Serving French bistro-inspired cuisine, choose from seasonal favorites or a set menu. Spend about $35.
Finish your day with a drink at The Crown. The popular pub offers a variety of beers. A pint runs about $6. Keep in mind: the pub can get crowded, so don’t be afraid to make some new friends.
