The Colombian capital has undergone something of a renaissance as the country as a whole shakes off its reputation for drug dealing and extra-judicial killings. Bogota is home to impressive culinary and art scenes, and there is certainly enough to keep you busy for more than one day.

Most backpackers stay in La Candelaria, where students and artists throng the cobbled streets. Start your day with breakfast in one of the many cafes ($5), where the famous Colombian coffee will give you the energy boost you need. Join the local joggers on the climb to the peak of Cerro de Monserrate, which affords a beautiful panoramic view of the city below.

From here, it’s time for an altogether more leisurely pursuit, a spin around the amazing Gold Museum (admission $2), which contains more than 55,000 pre-Hispanic artifacts. If you are hungry after your visit to the museum, head to the charming Salvo Patria bistro, where you can soak up some of Bogota’s cutting-edge cuisine ($30).

Walk around the historic center of town, where many revolutionary events took place, and admire the architecture of the official buildings. Later on, venture into the Paloquemao market to marvel at the produce of Colombia’s varied climates, snacking on some exotic fruit ($5).
After an active day, relax over dinner at Andres Carne de Res , which is worth the trip out of town. The huge restaurant boasts different rooms where you can eat, drink and even dance your night away ($45).
