Boulder’s stunning setting at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado makes it a playground of outdoor activities. But it’s also a charming small town, with walkable streets full of unique shops and restaurants.
For a cheap day in Boulder, spend the morning hiking in the Flatiron Mountains, accessible from Chautauqua Park near downtown. Fuel up at Lucile’s, where you’ll spend around $15 on a filling breakfast of Cajun and Creole dishes. The Flatirons hiking is free.

Stretch your legs further by walking the Pearl Street pedestrian mall, lined on both sides with shops and restaurants. You may fork over a few bucks for parking, but this is a great way to keep things cheap. Stop in a café along the way for lunch, which shouldn’t cost more than $20.
Next, head to the Celestial Seasonings tea factory, where you can take a free tour.
And finally, splurge a bit for dinner at The Kitchen, one of Boulder’s best restaurants focusing on local food. The menu shifts with the seasons, but this is always an excellent choice for dinner. Consider pairing your meal with a beer from the restaurant’s incredibly extensive menu.
