Under $100 / Latin America

The Argentinian capital is a sprawling metropolis that can seem overwhelming to first-time visitors. Here is your guide to seeing some of the best spots in the city without breaking the bank.

Argentinians are famous for staying up late and sleeping in, so breakfast fans might be hard pushed to find their favorites. Start the day the local way with coffee, medialunas (similar to croissants) and tostadas (toasted baguette with jam). Try them out at Panaderia La Argentina, which opened more than 100 years ago ($5).

Take a stroll to Recoleta Cemetery and wander around the tombs portenos. Among the grandest tombs are those of former Argentinian presidents, and former first lady Eva Peron (free).

It’s time for lunch and you are probably starving after eating only a light breakfast. What better way to kill those hunger pangs than with a huge slab of meat from a parrilla, or traditional Argentine grill. Steak restaurants are two a penny, but La Cabrera is one of the best and most well-known. You’ll get a discount if you go at lunchtime as well ($20).

After lunch head down to the colorful neighborhood of La Boca. Take a tour ($11) of the Boca Juniors stadium, La Bombonera, which is home to arguably the most famous team in Argentina. If you can get tickets to a game, it’s a truly memorable experience.

Following your tour, take a walk around La Boca and watch the tango dancers in the streets. It’s certainly put on for the benefit of the tourists, but it means you can watch some of the sensual dancing without paying to enter a special club.

As evening falls go up to Palermo Soho for some Armenian food at Sarkis. Order as much or as little as you like from the small plates menu ($16 per person) and then head out for drinks at Rey de Copas ($5 per drink) for some wine-based cocktails.
