North America

Detroit, the largest city in Michigan, has gone through some tough times. Crime and poverty have affected the city, but Detroit is bouncing back with a thriving arts and music scene and new top restaurants.

Start your day with house-roasted coffee at Commonwealth. Breakfast options are made in-house from local, organic ingredients. Spend about $15. Next, take a stroll along the Detroit Riverfront for a scenic look at the Detroit River surroundings.

Detroit is the birthplace of Motown Records, producing acts including Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Gladys Knight and the Pips and the Jackson 5. Experience that Motown sound with a visit to the Motown Museum, also known as Hitsville U.S.A. Admission to Motown Records’ first-headquarters-turned-museum costs $15 Friday–Sunday and $12 Tuesday–Thursday.

Grab lunch and some brews at Detroit Beer Company. Open since 2003, the brewpub serves up a variety of rotating beers and a full menu. Lunch and a beer or two costs about $22. Explore Detroit’s art scene at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. The museum features special exhibitions, events and lectures for a suggested entrance donation of $5.

Have dinner at Vertical Detroit. The restaurant and wine bar boasts an impressive wine list of more than 50 varieties by the glass and 500 bottle options. Dinner with wine costs about $40.

End your night with ping pong, Pac Man and a nightcap for about $10 at Punch Bowl Social.
