The pretty market town of Exeter is home to a sizeable university, which makes the town a lot livelier than many similar places.
It may sound unlikely, but one of the best breakfasts in town can be had at Truffles Pizzeria. Choose from a plentiful selection to start your day off with a bang ($6–10).
Suitably satisfied, take a stroll to the charming Exeter Cathedral. The town’s top attraction sits in front of the Cathedral Green, which is a perfect spot to take in the Gothic architecture and engage in a spot of people watching.
The center of town is packed with curiosities such as the 17th-century Guildhall, the oldest municipal building in England. There is also Parliament Street, which is thought to be the narrowest in the world.
It’s time for lunch and there are few better places than The Fat Pig. Tuck into some classic British pub fare, including roast dinners, sausage and mash or fish and chips ($12 with a drink).
Take a spin around the ruined city walls, and enjoy some of the independent shops which cater to the student population. Exeter is packed with history, including the quayside. Visit the 17th-century custom house, which is now home to the Exeter archaeological service.
For dinner, head to the Dinosaur Café, which offers Turkish and English food. Three courses cost just $23, with drinks adding around another $6. You can peruse the selection of titles in the adjoining bookshop while you digest your meal.
