Kish Island, 12 miles off the coast of Iran, is a former private resort that boasts a wealth of luxurious accommodations, excellent shopping and awe-inspiring beaches. Spending a day here probably won’t feel like enough, but any more than that could break the bank.
Start with a hearty meal at Lavazza Coffeehouse, an Italian café that serves delicious coffee. Set aside $15 for a meal. From there, begin exploring with the Harireh Ancient City. This eighth-century city is in the heart of Kish Island and boasts tons of ancient architecture.
Next, spend some time discovering the Green Tree Complex. The complex is on the northern side of the island in the Portuguese Valley. It contains one of the island’s oldest and largest lur trees, which many believe is able to grant wishes.
At lunchtime, make your way to Shandiz Safdari Restaurant for scrumptious kebabs. A meal will run you $20.
Spend the first half of the afternoon discovering the Kariz Underground City. Kariz is actually a system of tunnels that funnel water to arid areas. The tunnels stretch five miles and are fun to explore. Entrance to the underground museum is $10.
Take some time to relax along the stunning Marjan Beach. Here you’ll find a palm-laced coastline and dozens of watersports. Hang around until the sun sets, when you’ll want to head toward the pier. The ship in the distance in locally referred to as just the Greek Ship. It’s been stuck there since 1966.
Finally, enjoy a great meal at Kooh Noor. The restaurant serves wonderful European and Iranian food, but you’ll pay at least $30 for a meal.
