The charming city of Lille is situated in northern France, on the main train line between London and Paris. As such as it has become a popular weekend destination for Britons looking to sample some French culture. Here is the best of Lille on a budget.
Cafe Le Voltaire is unashamedly untrendy among a sea of new hipster locations in Lille. That means the focus is on the food, and the ham, cheese and egg crepes will set you up for the day ahead ($12).

Take your time to have a stroll around the cobbled streets of the Old Town before heading out to the Citadel, which is now a huge park.
Go for lunch at L’Omnia, a former theater and brothel now turned into a restaurant with a unique vibe. The lunch menu starts at $11, which is reasonable, and the whole experience is one you won’t forget.

In the afternoon, go to Le Tripostal ($7), a contemporary art gallery, and then to The Modern Art Museum ($7). Both are known for their challenging exhibitions that will make you think.
In the evening, go to bar/restaurant La Guinguette de la Marine, a unique location that serves local beers and delicacies ($20). After food, it’s time to hit the town and try some of the local beers that make the Flemish region famous. One of the best spots is La Capsule, which has 12 beers on tap and lots more in bottles ($6 each).
