Washington State’s Lummi Island is mostly residential, with summer beach camps and farms rather than resorts and tourist attractions. But that’s the appeal — here, everyone’s a local and a visit is aimed more at relaxation and restoration than packing in a busy schedule.
Still, island pursuits are pricey, so budget wisely. Start your day with breakfast at the Sause Burger stand, which serves weekend waffles and bites for around $15.
Spend your day lounging with a book, beachcombing or hiking the network of trails on the southern part of the island, maintained by the Lummi Island Heritage Trust.

Lunch at Sause again — there are so few restaurants here, you will inevitably hit one more than once. Burgers and hot dogs are made with locally raised meat and run you about $10.
In the afternoon, stop in at the Artisan Wine Gallery for a wine tasting of carefully selected labels, for $10. You can also spend time exploring art galleries and studios around the island using this map.
Finally, end your night on the porch at the Beach Store Café overlooking the Cascade Mountains and the ferry as the sun sets. The rest of your budget will serve you well with the selection of pizzas, salads and drinks.
