Proudly claiming itself the Home of Blues and Birthplace of Rock n’ Roll, Memphis is a southern city like no other.
Start your day with breakfast at Brother Juniper’s, a family-run, local favorite that provides fresh food with a side of charitable good will. The doors open early and stay open every day until 1:00 p.m., except for Saturday, when they close at 12:30 p.m.. The affordable breakfast menu includes plenty of options for less than $15, like classic omelets served with grits and home fries.
Thousands of Elvis Presley fans make the pilgrimage to Memphis to visit Graceland, and it’s not a site to be missed. You can tour the mansion and grounds for a little less than $40, complete with an iPad multimedia guide to lead you. The experience takes about two hours.
If you’d rather avoid the King and his followers, the Memphis Museum Hall of Fame off Beale Street offers a look at the lives and influence of many faces you’ll recognize, from Johnny Cash to ZZ Top to Justin Timberlake. Admission is only $8.
Before you leave, be sure to grab some world-famous Memphis barbecue for either lunch or dinner. Central BBQ may be your best bet for the most authentic taste in the city. Split a slab of ribs and four sides with your traveling companion for $25.
Spend your evening on Beale Street, where even a simple walk around the block is an experience. With plenty of clubs, bars, music venues and shops to choose from, you’ll be able to meander around this popular area for hours.
