The beautiful, bustling city of Montevideo is virtually impossible to explore within the confines of one day, but sometimes you have to make due with what you have. If you’re visiting this lively little city by the sea, you’ll want to pack as much in as possible for as little as you can.
Once departing your boat from the harbor, which is how many foreigners enter the city, you’ll want to make your way to the Mercado del Puerto. Here, you’ll find row after row of delicious restaurants and food stands for you to try. Make sure to sample the famous medio y medio, an alcoholic concoction that’s sure to improve your mood for the rest of the day.
Afterward, head to the rambla and take a walk along one of the world’s longest boardwalks. From there, make your way toward Plaza Sarandí, the center of Old Town where you find beautiful historic buildings and artistic endeavors, like the Spanish Cultural Center.
Stop for a brisk lunch at any of the local coffee shops for a cheap drink and meal. Once you’ve gotten your fill, head toward the neighborhood of Barrio Sur to experience the candombe drums, a traditional African rhythm made popular in Uruguay with the arrival of the African slave trade.
In the evening head back toward the beach to take in the sunset along Pocitos Beach, the liveliest and one of the best beaches in the city, before heading back out to sea.
