The surf town of Newquay is one of Cornwall’s most famous destinations. Here’s how you can enjoy its many attractions on a budget.
Bush Pepper is an Australian café where chef and owner Chris Brookes whips up breakfast favorites with an Aussie twist. There are hearty breakfasts that will keep you energized all day, including kangaroo sausages, and vegans also have a number of options ($12).
After breakfast head out for a morning surf in England’s surfing capital. There are 12 beaches to choose from around Newquay and board hire is easy to find, too. Don’t forget a wetsuit if you are surfing outside high summer, as things can get pretty chilly ($20 board hire half day).
Come back for lunch at The Boathouse, known for fresh-caught seafood. There is nothing overcomplicated about the menu here, but each dish is well flavored ($20).
In the afternoon take a stroll around Newquay Harbour and then head up to Trenance Gardens, a nice park where there is a boating lake and tea rooms serving tea and scones ($8). Head back into town and hit a couple of pubs — The Two Clomes is a good option (drinks around $5) — and then go for dinner at The Dolphin, the oldest trading restaurant in Newquay, open for more than 70 years ($25).
