Under $100 / Latin America

Ecuador is known for its relatively affordable cost, but, unfortunately, Quito tends to be the exception. That doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy it on a budget.

Ecuador used the U.S. dollar as its currency, so converting isn’t going to be an issue. To start out, make sure you search for local hostels to save a few bucks. Vibes Hostel is located in the heart of downtown and is within walking distance to all of the hot spots, and it goes for a nightly rate of only $8.50.

Skip out on dining at traditional restaurants and hit up the local street vendors for the best food and deals. An empanada in Quito should cost you no more than $1 to $2, while you can get a full meal for no more than $5. It’s easily the best way to try the local flavor.

The nightlife in Quito is fairly upbeat, but expect to pay between $5–10 for cover no matter where you go. Bungalow 6 is a popular joint, and during the weekdays your cover sometimes gets you two complimentary drinks. If you’re female, it’s pretty easy to get in for free.

The taxi system in Quito is metered, even though it’s unmetered everywhere else, so expect to pay between $3–5 to get where you’re going. The buses are less than $1.

During the day you can visit the Basilica del Volto Nacional for a paltry $3 entrance fee. To get a gorgeous view of the city and surrounding area take a trip on the TeleferiQo, a cable car that takes you to the top of the Pichincha Volcano. The round trip price for foreign adults is $8.

The Capilla del Hombre is a fantastic display of artwork you can tour for another $8 per person. Otherwise, feel free to spend your time walking the streets of the charming city and checking out places like La Ronda or the Plaza Grande. Luckily, most of the best sites in Quito are free to explore.
