Travelers who add the coastal country of Croatia to their European itineraries will not have to worry about stretching their kuna (the Croatian currency). The beachfront town of Split is not only warm, beautiful and inviting, it is also extremely affordable in every sense.
Start your day with a leisurely stroll along the promenade where an array of restaurants offer patio breakfast service including coffee and pastries to fuel your day of exploration. Once the sun is high in the sky, head into the enchanting Old Town where winding alleys give way to pop-up plazas, chic boutiques and cozy restaurants. Visions of Ancient Rome come to mind when passing the Temple of Jupiter and costumed Roman gladiators who are available for photos. Window-shopping doesn´t cost a cent, but choosing from the touristy eateries takes a bit of strategy. When in doubt, grab a slice of pizza from one of the corner pizzerias scattered throughout the town.
Water sports are a great way to beat the Adriatic heat. Although boat tours may be beyond your budget, there are other ways to enjoy the water including paddle boarding or swimming at one of the local beaches.
As the sun begins to set, put on a pair of comfortable shoes and climb the steps to Marjan, a hilltop park with views of the town, Adriatic Sea and surrounding mountains. A pleasant surprise awaits at the top of the stairs in the form of a restaurant with chairs facing the view. Reward yourself with a glass of Croatian wine as you soak in the sunset.
