There is no shortage of things to do in the beautiful seaport city of Tunis, so fitting them all into one day is a difficult task. Nonetheless, here are a few things to see during your stay that will cost you less than $100.
Begin your day at the famed Bardo Museum, where you can expect to spend two to three hours perusing the largest collection of Roman mosaics in the world. Be sure to grab a bite to eat from one of the street vendors in the area. Sit-down restaurants around the Bardo are touristy and expensive, as well as unauthentic.
From there, head over to the Carthage to have a look at the American war cemetery and the tombs of forgotten soldiers.
Nearby are the colorful souks of the Medina, a popular and lively area of the city full of shops, restaurants and architecture. The restaurants here are somewhat pricey, but you can find a great meal for under $20 per plate.
After your stroll through the Medina, you’ll want to visit the charming village of Sidi Bou Saïd. Here you’ll find walkways filled with blue-and-white stone architecture that looks like it came straight from the sea. It’s one of Tunisia’s most famous areas and well worth the hours you could waste walking around.
For dinner, again, we have to recommend the nearest street vendor. Not only is the food absolutely delicious, but it’s affordable and more in line with what real Tunisians eat in their homes than the stuff you’ll find in restaurants scattered throughout the area.
To make your way around the city, you can use public buses or the electric train, both of which cost less than $2. However, it’s time consuming to take public transportation so you might consider utilizing one of the many taxis in the city. They’ll often stick with you an entire day if you ask, but be sure to haggle for a decent price or you’ll blow your budget in no time.
