Health & Wellness

Get your workout in and travel? Fitness-based race vacations are taking off — hitting a PR while visiting somewhere new combines the best of both worlds. Make the most out of your time with these suggestions.

Book accommodations early

For events that start early, convenience is key. Staying near the start line means you’ll spend less time stressing about how you’ll arrive and more time getting pumped. Prime spots fill up quickly so don’t wait until the last minute to make a reservation.

Stay later

Most people will arrive a day or two before an event to enjoy all that the city has to offer. That means crowded restaurants, higher hotel rates and more congestion. If you can swing it, consider staying a few days after the event instead. Most visitors in town for the race will be gone by then. And, because the race is over, you’ll be less anxious and able to enjoy yourself more!

If you must have it, take it on the plane

This is a good rule when traveling for any major event — if you absolutely must have it, don’t pack it! You don’t want to land in San Diego while your trusty sneakers are stranded somewhere with your suitcase in Atlanta. Stow those items in your carry-on bag instead.

Don’t overexert yourself

It’s tempting to walk all around town, eat foods that aren’t available at home and stay up late trying new bars or clubs, but remember that your body needs its rest. Save it for after your race instead!

Have fun! You’re in a different place about to complete a fitness goal. Enjoy the moments.
