You would certainly be forgiven if when thinking about the Baja Peninsula of Mexico the last thing that comes to mind are world-class wines and chefs. However, in the last decade or two the region has become something truly special.
Located just a couple short hours from San Diego, the Valley of Guadaloupe is fast becoming a popular spot for those looking for a “daycation” or a weekend of eating and drinking on a high level. As you’ll be forced to get through Tijuana in order to make it to wine country, take a few minutes to see what the area is doing with craft beers. Yes, the border town cleaned itself up quite a bit in recent years and the once tacky, if not dangerous, Plaza Fiesta offers tastings from the growing craft beer culture for under a couple of bucks.
Now make your way south to the Valley and make sure you don’t miss out on a number of fantastic vineyards and wineries. It should be pointed out Mexicans visiting wine country do dress up when they go wine tasting, so you might find yourself a bit uncomfortable looking like a bum in flip flops.
There are a few wineries with tasting rooms that should absolutely not be missed: Mogor Badan certainly qualifies. Another must visit is Clos De Tres Cantos.
Finally, Las Nubes offers superb experimental wines while also giving you a delightful view of the valley from a winery that would make an architect blush.
There is no room here to talk about all the brilliant restaurants in this area but if you don’t fancy driving, Club Tengo Hambre offers all-inclusive transportation, winery visits and a delightful lunch for groups of 10.
