Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

Ashrams are ubiquitous in India. They are spiritual havens that attract all sorts of travelers and residents. Whether on a journey of spiritual-enlightenment or just seeking the complete India experience, you should definitely consider visiting one or two for at least a day.

Although they seem like a reprieve from the daily grind, there are still a few things to know before heading to these popular destinations. The first things you’ll encounter are hippies, religious fanatics and everything in between. Ashrams are popular because of their acceptance of all walks of life so the diversity of visitors is part of the experience.

There is usually some type of daily schedule that includes variations of meditation, physical yoga practices and chanting. Depending on which ashram you’re visiting, these may or may not be mandatory. If they’re not, still give them a try. You may be surprised to find the centuries old chants to be a moving experience.

Enjoy the food. Generally ashrams have a flat fee that covers your accommodations and three meals a day. While traveling, not having to search for food in foreign cities at every meal is welcomed. Not to mention the food in India is, more often than not, what keeps people coming visiting.
