If you’ve ever taken a U.S. history course before, you are probably somewhat familiar with the Battle of Gettysburg. This particular Civil War skirmish began when a group of Confederate soldiers unwittingly met Union troops in the Pennsylvania city of Gettysburg whilst riding into town to find shoes. In modern-day Gettysburg, you can catch a reenactment of the epic three-day battle that marked the turning point of the Civil War July 1–3.
This year marks the 153rd anniversary of the largest battle ever fought in the United States. For history buffs and antique lovers alike, Gettysburg is an excellent place to get away for a short weekend trip. The historic town is approximately 3.5 hours from New York City, 2.5 hours from Philadelphia and 1.5 hours from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Because of its close proximity to the Washington, D.C., area, it is also an ideal pit stop for tourists looking to explore American history around the capitol.
Aside from the epic battle reenactment that takes place every year, Gettysburg has several museums, such as the Gettysburg Heritage Center and the Gettysburg Museum of History, as well as the expansive Gettysburg National Military Park. If you are interested in military history, visiting this critical Civil War town is a must.
