Visit the City of 100 Murals

If you’re a fan of public artwork and always make a point to seek out murals during every trip (they make for great photo ops, after all), then you’ll want to make tracks for the City of 100 Murals: Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Okay, so maybe Hattiesburg, Mississippi, isn’t the City of 100 Murals just yet. Instead, that’s a goal the destination is actively working toward. It is, though, more than halfway there, and the city just unveiled one of its newest murals, Jam Session, which celebrates the city’s rock ‘n roll history (what’s considered to be the first rock and roll track, “Crazy About My Baby” by “Blind” Roosevelt Graves, from 1936, was written in Hattiesburg, and Jimmy Buffet called Hattiesburg home for a time). The mural features Jimmy Buffett and “Blind” Roosevelt Graves, but also other rock and jazz legends with ties to the area.

The Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art offers a guide to the city’s existing murals, but you can also learn more about the destination’s other public art through the Alliance, such as area public sculptures and the unique Utility Box Trail, with more than 40 painted utility boxes scattered throughout the city.
