Greece’s message is clear: Don’t let economic troubles keep you away. That makes sense, considering the country relies heavily on tourism dollars.
But the encouragement from Greece to visitors isn’t bad advice for travelers. There’s still plenty to see and do, it’s not just that the country needs your money.
Visitors to Greece may notice some surface-level hints that the country is struggling. Athens is filled with graffiti, and you’re likely to see homeless people on the streets asking for money or a meal. But don’t let that stop you, as your experience will overall be an enjoyable one.
You’ll find the Greeks warm and welcoming, whether you’re eating in their restaurants, learning about their history at archeological sites or browsing their shops for jewelry and art to take home. The prices are lower, too, and depending on where you’re traveling from, you’re likely to have one of the most favorable exchange rates in memory.
Be aware, though, museums and sites sometimes close without warning. Try to be flexible as much as you can during your travels, and be mentally prepared for these types of interruptions
