Just a short drive north of New Orleans sits the so-called Northshore, a region of tall pine trees and rolling hills situated on the northern edge of the massive Lake Pontchartrain in southeast Louisiana.
The Northshore makes for a great daytrip if you’re staying in the city. It’s peaceful, with worthwhile shops and restaurants, scenic parks and a rhythm of life that moves a little slower than in the big city.
Spend a day or two getting to know the towns of Madisonville, Mandeville, Covington, Abita Springs and Lacombe. In Madisonville, head to T River’s Bar at the end of a narrow road through the marsh along the alligator-laden Tchefuncte River.
In Mandeville, head to the historic old town to stroll along the lakefront, under massive oak trees, and then have beers outside on the patio at the Barley Oak. Covington is great for shopping, with numerous galleries and small shops lining the old town, as well as antiques and more art along Lee Lane.
In Abita Springs, take a free tour of the Abita Brewing Company, the largest microbrewery in Louisiana. Samples abound. And in Lacombe, spring for a meal at La Provence, a lovely French restaurant under the leadership of famous chef John Besh, who raises much of the ingredients in the meals on site.
