The Grenada Tourism Authority recently launched a new voluntourism program to help travelers find local volunteer opportunities to make a tangible impact on the island. With a range of opportunities available, travelers can choose to support a cause that matters most to them, whether they’re interested in agriculture, the environment, education or health.
Some of the volunteer opportunities include working with Get Swimming Grenada, a nonprofit that provides free swimming lessons to impoverished children; participating volunteers teach children and adults to swim.
Volunteers concerned with environmental causes can help with beach and reef cleanups, or counting urchins and fish on artificial reefs in Marine Protected Areas. Travelers interested in agriculture can help with mountainside farming or with maintenance at community gardens.
“For travelers, voluntourism provides an intimate and memorable experience, which allows them to make deep and meaningful connections with our local community whilst leaving a positive footprint on the island,” said Petra Roach, CEO, Grenada Tourism Authority. “We want to connect through their hearts and passions, which will in turn increase their propensity to return to the island. We want to join together to be better global citizens and be intentional about ensuring a positive impact and bringing about positive change.”
