Being of Irish descent, it was imperative I go to Dublin during my time abroad. My parents recently visited the Irish capital, so they sent me a must-see list. Upon my arrival in Dublin, I stepped off the ferry and began to do what I do best — wander.
Wandering is the best way to truly experience a place. It gives you the opportunity to stumble upon parts of the city you could miss while following an itinerary. It’s the best way to fully experience the local culture firsthand. One of my favorite places in Dublin was a small corner pub called the Cobblestone. Sitting there with a pint of Guinness, listening to the live traditional Irish music, I discovered the heartwarmingly friendly nature of the Irish people. It was a perfect beginning to my visit.
The next day was filled with the attractions my parents suggested. We toured the Guinness Storehouse and the Old Jameson Distillery (my liver hated me, but I was in Dublin after all).
After the tour, I checked out the Brazen Head (www.brazenhead.com), which is the oldest pub in the world and a definite must-see. The night there consisted of food, drinks and storytelling. The stories told were historically authentic, as well as entertaining. I left the place with a deeper understanding of true Irish culture. This too short trip was an amazing experience, a lifetime memory and a strong motivator to plan a future trip back to the “homeland!”
