What are Japan’s Onsen?

Onsen refers to both hot springs and traditional inns often found around the springs, where you can relax and stay the night.

They are an important part of the culture, and onsen are governed by a set of rules that may seem impenetrable at first. First of all, you’re not meant to wear any clothing in the baths, so be prepared to go naked.

You are also expected to shower before you get in, for obvious reasons, and you are meant to sit down on a shower stool while you do so. Those with long hair will also be expected to tie it up and keep it out of the water, while tattoos are banned at most onsen.

Some of the most famous onsen are tourist destinations in their own right, and you will have to book far in advance if you want to stay the night. Kusatsu is one of the most well-known in the country, and it’s in a popular skiing area, too. Another option is Hakone, less than two hours from Tokyo, and Beppu, a city home to eight separate onsen. Wherever you are in Japan you are likely not far from an onsen, so you’ll be able to get your hot spring fix.
