The Navigli neighborhood in Milan, Italy, is a perfect location for travelers interested in lively nightlife, chic boutiques and charming restaurants.
Navigli gets its name from its location, situated between two manmade canals: Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese. These canals transported goods and served as an irrigation system. Today, the popular neighborhood draws travelers due in part to its nightlife scene and cultural attractions. The area can easily be reached by metro, tram or car. For those who don’t mind walking, it’s about a 30-minute walk from downtown Milan.
The last Sunday of each month, a large flea market runs along Naviglio Grande, boasting up to 400 stalls full of antiques, art, vintage clothing, books and more. If your visit does not coincide with the market, spend time exploring the many eclectic art galleries and specialty shops along the canals.
A visit to Navigli, and Italy, is not complete without enjoying an apertivo, or a cocktail before a meal. With many spots to choose from, some of the best bars in the neighborhood include La Prosciutteria, Rita and Cocktails, Iter, and Backdoor 43. Enjoy a meal at one of Navigli’s numerous restaurants, many with beautiful canal views. For traditional Milanese cuisine, head to Osteria Conchetta. Visit vibrant Gloria for small plates and fun drinks, while Zio Pesce offers casual seafood dishes.
