Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta aren’t the only Pacific Coast destinations in Mexico worth your attention. Mazatlán is worth considering for an upcoming getaway, too.
Sitting north of Puerto Vallarta and almost flush with Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán has plenty to offer, from beaches to history, but one of its main attractions? Eco-tourism.

During a trip to Mazatlán, experiencing some of the destination’s eco-tourism offerings is a must.
Consider visiting Verde Camacho Turtle Sanctuary, which helps protect Olive Ridley sea turtles. Since its founding in 1975, the sanctuary has helped release more than 1 million turtles into the sea, as well as establish more than 15,000 nests. Turtle release season runs August–December, and you can take myriad tours to teach you about conservation efforts and show you the turtles (safely, of course!).

If you’re not visiting during turtle release season, try a visit to one of the area’s top bird-watching sites, such as Estero Del Yugo Nature Preserve, with its hiking and walking trails, or El Nido Mexican Bird Sanctuary. The latter is located within Touristic Park Observatorio 1873, the perfect place to also experience some of the area’s history (it’s home to one of the oldest buildings in Mazatlán).
Off-shore, Sea of Cortes is an excellent spot to go whale watching or dolphin watching.
