While York, Maine, may not be quite as well known a Maine vacation destination as, say, Bar Harbor or Ogunquit, it still offers plenty for travelers who want a low-key, small-town beach vacation. Here’s what to do while you’re there.
Head to the Beach
York has two primary public beaches: Long Sands Beach and Short Sands Beach. Long Sands Beach is, as the name suggests, much longer than Short Sands Beach, but both come with pros and cons. Long Sands Beach offers more space and ample parking along the street (so long as you claim your space early in the day). However, Short Sands Beach offers a location right in town, so you can easily walk from the beach to shops and restaurants (there are a handful of shops and restaurants facing Long Sands Beach, but relatively few).
Visit Nubble Lighthouse
York’s premiere attraction is Nubble Lighthouse. Situated on a small island right off the coast, you can get an up-close-and-personal view when you head to Sohier Park.
Try the Local Brews and Spirits
Parched? Head to York Beach Beer Co. to sample local brews. Grab a light bite from the on-site food truck, as well. If spirits are more your style, try Wiggly Bridge Distillery. In addition to a tasting, you can also book a tour.
Chow Down on All the Maine Lobster
You can’t visit Maine without eating a lobster roll (or two or three). Try the options available at Fox’s Lobster House, or go for the lobster sliders at A Little Auk. Both offer views of Nubble Lighthouse.

At one point, the Royal Caribbean Oasis-class ships were the largest in the world. While that’s not the case any longer (other Royal Caribbean ships have surpassed them), these ships are still pretty impressive — and, with recent renovations, they’re becoming even more so, as can be seen with the revamped Allure of the Seas. Ready to set sail in April 2025 with a bevy of new features, the ship is getting a $100 million makeover.
