With the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships taking place in Scotland, there’s never been a better time to explore Scotland on two wheels than now. From quiet roads to thrilling mountain routes, Scotland offers a wide range of biking trails for all skill levels.
Dumfries and Galloway
In Southwest Scotland lies the birthplace of the bike. Dumfries and Galloway, recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere, is also one of the stops on Scotland’s UNESCO Trail and features more than 450 miles of signposted cycle routes, off-road trails and world-class mountain bike trail centers. For a relaxing ride through forests, the trails of Mabie or Dalbeattie immerse cyclists in fresh country air and native wildlife. Adventure cyclists can take on the challenging climb of The Galloway Hills, while those wanting to tackle longer distances can try Solway Coast 200, starting at Scotland’s most southern point and ending in Gretna Green.
In between cycling trips, take a break at Sweetheart Abbey, founded in 1273, or at Drumlanrig Castle, featuring extensive woodland trails and views across Nith valley.
Falkirk
Between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Falkirk is home to Falkirk Wheel, Antonine Wall and John Muir Way. The Falkirk area features routes suitable for all cycling abilities. At Zetland Park, enjoy free bike hires while cruising by the river and past a restored war memorial.
Perthshire
Lush forests, peaceful glens and rushing rivers awe cyclists in Perthshire. Peruse these pre-designed itineraries to cycle through some of the region’s most beautiful sites or design your own route here. Sites like Scottish Crannog Centre reopen later this year, allowing cyclists to explore the lives of Iron Age society. Cyclists can also pedal along River Tay Way to take in some of the area’s finest countryside views. Other sites to visit along the way include Cateran Ecomuseum and Black Watch Museum, the only Scottish venue to host this eerie World War I sculpture on display from July.
